Open-faced sandwiches Copenhagen

Classic open-faced sandwiches with a twist

The galley serves classic Danish open sandwiches with a twist. Always homemade and made from the best seasonal ingredients.

One of the greatest pleasures of Danish cultural heritage is the 'classic Danish lunch table', where open sandwiches play a central role. Most of us have our own favorite open-faced sandwiches that we always come back to. Maybe it's the chicken salad, fish fillet, or egg and shrimp? Maybe a lion sandwich or potato sandwich? One thing is certain: you'll find all the classics here at Færgecaféen.

Our open-faced sandwiches are always freshly made and prepared with respect for tradition, to which we like to add a little twist. Everything is homemade; we pickle and braise just like our mothers did, and the open-faced sandwiches follow the seasons so that the ingredients are fresh and the best possible for the time of year.

Open sandwiches & schnapps in the heart of Copenhagen

Smørrebrød tastes just a little better when it's treated as an experience. That's why we like to serve lunch with a generous shot of schnapps – and on the schnapps menu you 'll find both homemade schnapps and selected aquavits.

Christianshavns Færgecafé is located in the heart of Christianshavn, right by the water. It's easy to get to, but hard to leave once you're sitting there with a view of the canal and smørrebrød on the table. In the evening, you can order from our à la carte menu featuring delicious Danish classics or choose between a seasonal menu and the Captain's evening menu.

Classics with a twist

The lunch menu includes classics such as:

– Butter-fried fish fillet – either with Færgecaféen's remoulade or with boiled shrimp, dill mayonnaise, and lemon

– Færgecaféen's curry herring with fresh apple, shallot cream, and chives

– Roast beef with mustard pickles, horseradish, and roasted onions

… And the warm favorites such as Parisian steak, omelet, and tartlets.

We recommend between two and three pieces of open-faced sandwiches, depending on how hungry you are. The classic open-faced sandwich lunch starts with a piece of fish, then a warm piece, and finally cheese or something sweet. But anything is possible; we have pieces with fish or seafood, herring, green pieces, pieces with meat, 'the warm' and cheese.

Welcome on board.
